Representative Profile

Yuko Shimoji

Born in 1999, she spent her early childhood in Washington, D.C., USA. At the age of 16, she moved to Canada alone to study at the School of Alberta Ballet. In 2017, she enrolled in the Department of Philosophy at Sophia University in Tokyo. That same summer, she began her career as a professional dancer, performing for a total of four years with Rudra Béjart Ballet in Lausanne, Switzerland, and the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York, USA.

In 2019, she received the Best Choreography Award at one of the major national ballet competitions in the United States. This recognition led to her work being featured at the 9/11 memorial service at Ground Zero, where a piece she choreographed and directed was performed and broadcast nationwide—marking the start of her career as a choreographer and director.

Following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, she returned to Japan and began offering ballet classes at children's homes as a self-funded social initiative. In 2022, she established a general incorporated association. While expanding its activities, she also launched a student dormitory business by renovating a traditional Japanese house, which she later sold. In August 2024, she relaunched the association under a new organizational structure.

Moving between the worlds of business and the performing arts, she has continued to deepen her work as an artist. From 2020 to 2023, she presented choreographic works primarily in Israel and France. In 2023, she became the first Japanese finalist at a choreography competition in Turin, Italy, ranking third in the world in the preliminary round. In 2025, she premiered her concept-driven stage production UZETSU, which combines taiko drumming and contemporary dance, at Tokyo Creative Salon 2025 to critical acclaim. She is currently launching a production company centered around UZETSU, aiming to bring the work to global audiences through an international tour.
